These might help fend off Carpal tunnel syndrome. March 11, 2010 Hammock Rider (Talk of the Town Trailer Estates Park - Southern California) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I worked for years in various offices and used computers for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. After some time I noticed tweaks and twinges in my right forearm and wrist. They didn't want to go away and they started to get more and more insistent. I was afraid it might be the onset of Carpel Tunnel Syndrome. I'd worked with people who had suffered from it and it was nothing I wanted any part of, including those nylon "slings" some of them had to wear to help control the pain.
I thought that if I strengthened by hands, wrists, etc. then I might not have to deal with Carpel Tunnel, so I researched hand grippers on-line and decided that the Captains of Crush were the best quality gripper available. I ordered the 60 pound Guide, the 80 pound Sport and the 100 pound Trainer as well as a small instruction booklet and went to work. The grips themselves are knurled, which can bite into your skin a little if you have soft hands, but after a few weeks use your skin toughens up and it doesn't bother you. I stuck with the program and I'm happy to say it worked. After slowly strengthening my hands and wrists, and stretching them too, the pain stopped. It doesn't take much time, you only need to train 3 days a week for maybe 10 minutes a session.
Now I kind of like using these and I enjoy the challenge of moving up to the next level. I use 140 pound #1 right now and I'm looking forward to moving up to the 167 pound #1.5. It's just a fun little goal that I like to pursue. The main benefit is that I have pretty healthy, strong hands and I've solved my (possible, I was never diagnosed) Carpel Tunnel situation without resorting to expensive medical treatment.
Quality Hand Grippers March 5, 2010 DR The Captains of Crunch hand gripper #1 is a top quality hand gripper, not for the faint of heart.
Excellent March 3, 2010 brontosayros (Greece) This is my first gripper. It's of excellent quality and it looks as if it will last forever. The number 1 that I got is probably a good gripper to start with. It's not very easy to close and not too hard to get you frustrated. By the way I work out regularly, and my grip was fairly good to begin with so people who are not very athletic may want to start with a lower level gripper. These grippers are not the cheapest around but you can tell there are worth the money. Next goal is to get to number 2. Overall, an excellent buy.
Exactly what I was looking for February 28, 2010 Jason Sheets (Boise, ID) I've been training my grip for about a year with the standard grippers and got tired of doing hundreds of reps for declining benefit.
These give me a great grip workout with 30 to 50 reps. Like a few others have said if your hands aren't already tough be prepared to lose some skin and build some callouses but it's worth it.
Unless you know for sure you are ready for #1 start with the trainer and work up.
This thing is serious February 21, 2010 The Furious One Just got this delivered today. Got the Trainer a few days ago and could do about 30 reps on it, so I ordered the #1 immediately, figuring it would give me a better workout. It sure does. Took it out of the package and went to work - can only do 5 reps with the right hand and allllmost 1 rep with the left.
These grippers are solid, made to last, and offer all the resistance you could want. The grips are textured somewhere between a barbell grip and a fine shop file. Some report that the grip is too rough and give callouses easily but if you work with your hands or do exercise that requires grip (weightlifting, rowing, etc.) then this should be no big deal.
My only minor complaint is that my #1 came with a squeak. The trainer was smooth and quiet, though, so I figure I'll put a little WD-40 on the #1 later.
In short, if you want to work your grip the same way you work the rest of your muscle groups, get a CoC. I plan on using the trainer for warmups and the 1 for work sets (negatives and partials for the left hand).
