The beginners starting point for grip strength. August 30, 2010 D. D. (USA) These are a decent starting point for most guys. I got the sports version for warming up. I found these to be a decent challenge and can close all the way. Definitely not the cheap grippers you find in most stores.
Quality. Good. I don't expect these things to break anytime soon, they appear very solid.
TIP: The grip WILL callous your hand hands if you have smooth hands. If for whatever reason that is your own you don't want callous here is what I did.
Someone suggested using bandage tape, but I found overhand grip wrapping to be great (used on the handle of a tennis racket). These will stop your hands from getting any callous but you still have to do all the work. "Microzorb or Tourna Grip Tennis Overgrip" I use Tourna but either should be fine.
Helloooo man-hands August 30, 2010 Alex With regular training, these hand grips will significantly increase grip strength. Although hanging grips are a little different from the grip that captains of crush grippers help train, I seem to be able to do more pull-ups too.
Like it's been said before, these things will give you man-hands...not just in terms of strength, but it will tear your hand up and make them much more rough if your hands aren't already torn up and callused. The pain of the callusing process is negligible and I personally got used to the texture of the grip just after a few days.
One thing I wanted to know before I decided to buy this was how big it was. After a bit of research, people were talking about it being too wide in certain cases and thus too difficult to close. When I spread out my fingers, the distance from the tip of my thumb to the tip of my pinky is about 8.5 inches, and I have no problem doing a no-set with the gripper.
It's a wonderful gripper for those who really want to improve forearm strength June 25, 2010 Eric B. Simms (USA) I've used cheaper grippers in the past, and I can tell that I have a superior product when I use a Captains of Crush (CoC) gripper. Some have commented that the gripper's handles are too rough, but I disagree. Smoother handles would be dangerous, as the gripper could slip from your grasp and cause injury to others as it flies through the air, or more likely it would injure your hand through the sudden, unexpected release of pressure. When you're dealing with that much force, you need to be sure your gripper will remain in place.
Admittedly the gripper is pricey when compared to other grippers, but it's well worth the cost.
A Must for any Strength Athlete At Any Level February 20, 2010 Chris Hanninger (North Canton, OH United States) I should start out by saying up until recently I was not impressed by grip strength and really had no desire to effectively "train" my grip. Although I realized it was a big part of strength athletics I never saw it as a "stand alone" element. Powerlifters, Strongman/woman, Olympic Style Weightlifters, Mountain Climbers, Gymnasts, and Public Safety Officers will all benefit from using this piece of equipment. Be warned this is not your average store bought gripper that comes with a workout set. The Trainer level, offers a 100lb (45.35kg) resistance. Some people complain about the grip on the handle, saying it's too rough and hurts and damages the hand. I can assure you that if you are in the sports listed above, a little bit of rough knurling shouldn't faze you. The grip even looks like a barbell, with the smooth rings in the center of which creates a strangely comfortable feeling to strength and power athletes when held in the hand. The resistance is accurate, however through the squeeze you will feel an increase in tension in the wrist similar to the muscular tension effect a press has with chains in Power-lifts. It should be noted that the 100lbs is the resistance when fully closed (handles touching each other). These can also be used for isometric training as well, simulating a static hang pull up. It is very possible however to over train with these and cause tendon and ligament damage to the hands, wrist and even forearms. Do not let it deter you however from getting any of the Captains of Crush Grippers.
As for some motivation, Magnus Samuelsson closed the No. 4 (365lb) Gripper in 2004. Happy Training!
Should've got the #1... February 18, 2010 The Furious One 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Well, I just got interested in grip strength and was tempted to start with the #1. After reading the reviews here, I decided to go with the trainer before. I've never trained my grip strength before and figured that was the wise choice. Well, the trainer arrived today, and I eagerly ripped open the packaging like a kid on Christmas and went to work. I fired off 30 reps closing completely right away. Should have listened to my instincts and gone with the #1. So I'll get that one next. These things are of amazing quality and feel really solid. If you're a big guy like me (200 lbs+) and strength train seriously you'll want to skip the trainer.
