Ackkkkk the down time makes you nuts! July 10, 2010 Kitty Hooligan (Citizen of the World) Let me start off saying I am coming back from a double severe wrist injury that coincided with a back injury. I was out for almost a year. I started exercising gently 4 months a go and ready to start building up.
All the reviews about the rest time are dead on! So frustrating. Even someone like me, knew to kettle, it made me nuts to have to wait. I felt bored and frustrated and felt the RHYTHM of the workout was ruined. I wanted and was hoping for something aerobic too. What I will do, sit down, sketch the exercise with a stick figure and write how many reps, and do the work out without the DVD, to music.
So disappointed.
Gofit Kettlebells Iron Core Express DVD Volume 3 May 16, 2010 L. Skier (Castle Hill, NSW, AU) Sarah is a great instructor. A 20 minute hard straight forward workout with great cues and form demonstrated. All her dvd's are worth the purchase. Can also be used with a heavier bell for a strength workout as opposed to a more cardio workout. I would advise if you haven't trained with Kettlebells previously to do her first instructional dvd's first, this dvd assumes you have previous training knowledge.
Good workout March 30, 2010 Gloss 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have owned this DVD for a few years, and it was my first kettlebell DVD. It is undeniably a good workout, but I prefer 10 Minute Solution Kettlebell Ultimate Fat Burner with Michele Olson (hard to find!).
This DVD provides a tough, thorough exercise, but it is boring to spend 20 minutes doing the same very basic moves two times through. I usually have to put on my own music to stay interested. Actually, I sometimes now do the exercises without the DVD, just watching TV, because the exercises are so basic.
Another con is that there is not much explanation of technique; this may be because it's "Volume 3." My kettlebell is Iron Core brand, so I happen to have the explanatory DVD, but I don't like how the instructor (Sarah Lurie) says, "Make sure you have the technique down from Volume 1 (or whatever)." This just feels gimmicky and commercial to me - the DVD should be able to stand alone and provide a good, safe workout. I don't have 45 minutes to devote to this (especially bc she's so boring), so I don't plan on buying Vol. 1 or 2.
That brings me to another point: Sarah Lurie is BORING. She makes no attempt to engage or explain in a way that makes the time fly. And her cuing is atrocious. There is maybe ONE swing segment for which she counts properly, and she doesn't do the "mirror image" thing that is virtually standard for exercise videos (saying "the right side" while doing the exercise on her own left).
I like 10 Minute Solution Kettlebell Ultimate Fat Burner better by far, although it's difficult to find. It's 5 different 10 minute segments, and each segment includes a variety of exercises, plus a short warm-up and cool down. Michele Olson is engaging and likable, and she describes the technique and purpose of kettlebell. She also doesn't count reps aloud; she just talks through the exercises, so you're not even counting reps (she does, however, do a specific amount of reps and never messes up on the cuing!). At times, you are doing 20 reps without even realizing it -- time just flies by because she's constantly explaining what you should be doing and why. Also, you are in motion the full 10 minutes, even when taking a brief rest from the actual kettlebell moves. In contrast, the Kettlebell Express video includes breaks between each set, which is nice, but kind of a waste of time.
I'm in my 20s and in relatively good shape, if that helps. This is not for people with knee problems of any sort. I felt compelled to write a review after not doing this DVD for a while (many months or maybe even a year) and coming back to it after doing other exercise DVDs in the meantime (kettlebell and other). In comparison, it really struck me just how bad the cuing and excitement level were.
Wonderful DVD - more advanced compound movements October 31, 2009 E. C. Noebel (California) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
For all those who said Sarah's DVD's (Vols 1 and 2) were too easy, this one is for them. It is only three compound exercises repeated in several circuits. It does not feature any instructional material (she presupposes you have seen Vols 1 and 2), but I think this is a great workout. Her voice is more smooth and less sing-songy - essentially, Sarah's videos are my GO-TO kettlebell videos. Extremely accessible. I don't get it with people not liking the rest periods. Most of instructors who offer DVDs include a rest period of some sort, and if you don't need that 30 second rest to bring your heart rate down (and I certainly do), then you need a heavier bell. That's the point of HIIT. I used a 16 kilo bell today, and most definitely needed a longer rest period as I hit my max on heart rate, which I monitor after each exercise. These videos, all of them, can be as hard as you want to make them; no problem.
Great All Around Workout March 24, 2009 Kathryn 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I love this! Quick and efficient! I take advantage of the 30 second breaks between sets to get a set of abs in. In 20 minutes you have a thorough core workout! I have worn my heart rate monitor while doing this and I am able to get up to 75% of my max so it definetely counts as cardio too!
Some things I have read say that women should start Kettlebell workouts with 15 pounds. I am not a whimpy exerciser and I think 10lbs is a good place to start.
