warranty issues, very difficult to assemble June 20, 2010 sandwichtyme 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The warranty must be returned within 10 days of purchase - this is absurd. This includes the 5+ days it will take to ship the bench out to you, so if you are very lucky you will have time to both notice this fine print and also return the warranty by overnight mail. further, there is no indication anywhere as to which number the "Serial Number" is on the bench. There are 3 different ID codes on the bench, none of them marked. This is all irrelevant for me as I didn't even notice that the warranty can only be valid if returned within 10 days from the date of purchase - I didn't have time to assemble this until a week after receiving it, so I definitely didn't bother sending the warranty in late. Note that this bench doesn't come with all the tools necessary to build it (you need 2 large wrenches or better yet locking pliers to build this).
There were a dozen or so large scratches on my equipment. The parts seemed to all be there, though the brass washers which are supposed to be on nearly every hole on the frame were missing from 2 spots, and some of the others fell off constantly - very annoying.
The seat pads are ridiculous - they didn't align with the frame for me, so I could only screw in one side of the pads. I know I assembled the frame right so the problem is not on my end.
They should also make it more of a point/in larger font etc to state that you should only tighten all bolts at the very end - instead, they state this in a single sentence in 10pt font, in gray on a white background (a lot of the crucial steps are inexplicably in light gray text on a white background - hard to read).
So it works well, but there are serious flaws to the product (largest being the warranty hoops you must jump through) and I'm not surprised they just dropped the price by $100.
Unless you live 100's of miles from a sporting goods/dept. store or can cope with the above, I recommend going to a store like that and buying a unit that is pre-assembled and that you can try out first.
Warning! Requires tools, patience, and ability to work with tools to assemble. February 16, 2010 Edmundo Orejel (Los Angeles, Ca.) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bought this product for its versatility and its compact size. However, once I received it, I realized that it was not packaged properly. After assembling it, which took 2 - 3 hrs, I realized I was missing a part and had an extra part that I should not have had. The bolts to the seat do not all fit at the first try. You have to put the bench together, then take it apart and put the seat pads on before it is assembled as this is how I managed to make all the bolts for the seats to fit properly. This bench requires the ability to read manuals and identify parts rather easily. It is not for someone who does not know a thing about tools, washers, nuts, bolts, etc.
Since I am missing a crucial part to workout me legs, I won't be targeting legs with this bench just yet. However, I will be able to use the bench at all positions to finally target my chest muscles.
In short, purchase this bench at your own risk and do not expect it to have all the parts once it arrives at your doorstep. Have patience and everything will be alright.
The bench looks like it can handle a good workout, but we'll truly see how good it is once I take it apart again and put it back together to make sure everything is on there tight and properly.
Buy this bench at your own risk. You will need tools to put it together.
2-22-10 I have received the missing part of this bench and can now work on my legs. Customer service was very helpful in this manner. This bench is a nice addition to my always growing home-gym.
tank. December 5, 2009 A Graphic Designer (Star IV) it's a tank. downright fun to assemble. a bit messily packed and a few scuffs, but i've already stopped caring.
it's heavy, much more sturdy than the junk you find at sport authority, big 5 etc.
durable, sleek, powerful, adjustable, sexy, and made for people who actually USE the gear they buy
i did my research before buying and this is the best FID bench on the market... and quite possibly the best quality leg developer on any bench
it even comes with an olympic adapter that bolts on sturdy. many benches don't.
if this bench got you reaching for the plastic, keep going.
it's the one you want.
PS the photo lies: mine isn't that color, it's 100% jet black with some chrome highlights. i was VERY happy to discover this!
Body Solid FID46 May 5, 2009 Erik Welter (Pullman, Wa United States) As previously stated in another review this is a solid bench. I've had it for a few weeks and after some use have found it to be well worth the money. The only thing I have found of any real significance is the heighth of the bench. I'm relatively tall and this bench is almost too tall for me. Anyone who is under 6 ft may want to consider trying it before purchase.
Assembly was pretty easy, although I had read some of the other reviews stating problems with understanding the directions and was prepared for that. As stated in another review, I did find that the bench holes did not line up with the tubes, but was a workable problem.
Bottom line, for the money you are going to pay for this bench you are going to get a beast. It is solid and sturdy with little in the way of movement. Overall a very good bench for the price.
Good Bench...GREAT Value December 21, 2008 Richard D. Foytek (South Lyon, MI) I chose this bench to resume (after a 12 year pause) a strength training routine. After doing a fair amount of research, this bench seemed like a great bench for a dumbell program along with some plates for legs. What sold me was the price Amazon had it for. It arrived @ my door for less than $290. I would have given it 5 stars, but the seat & back cushions did not allow for all of the bolts to bolt up. I called Body-Solid Customer Service. They quickly sent out replacement pieces...no questions asked. I have yet to put the new ones on, but am confident they will work. I have used it for about a month and enjoy the adjustability and durability. The wheels also make it easy to move around! Bottom line, a very substantial bench at a great price.
