Exactly what I was looking for.. June 22, 2010 Jay (New Haven, CT) I can clearly see why the package can deliver in a sorry state as others have noted, this thing is heavy and packing is basically weights in a box. I'm also not sure how else you can pack them..they are weights !! I received mine in great shape and had all the parts. The barbell assembly was straightforward with a hammer and it definitely handles 115 pounds with ease and feels solid.
I wasn't expecting solid weights to begin with but didn't expect to see some heavy duty plastic filled with sand (or similar material) and sealed off with a white liquid that seems to have dried. This is not a negative, but actually a nice idea to effectively bring down the price while end result being the same. (if you use it regularly that is :p )
The only negative rather awkward aspect is the bulkiness of the larger plates, you arms feel lost between two large plates even through you have only 20 pounds on a dumbbell. But once you get used to this, this is a great set and simply does the job. I primarily use it as part of hybrid fitness training and the days I don't go to the gym. Only advice, don't slam this on hard surface like you would do in the gym. I work out on hard wood floor and I use standard carpets to place the weights.
JUNK..DO NOT BUY THIS SET June 16, 2010 Asilverguy (Weston, FL USA) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
CAUTION: READ PRODUCT DESCRIPTION VERY CAREFULLY!!!!!!!! These are really cheezy, cheap, plastic, sand filled weights. The weights are not accurate..I weighed them, they are not true to weight. The bar is thin and cheezy...actually seems dangerous to use as it is a hollow metal tube. The "weights" are thick, clunky, oversized plastic discs that leak...I just don't know how anyone can use them. I wanted real metal plates, but wasted my money on this junk. Oh, BTW, returning is not an option as the box was a ripped up piece of junk that was taped together with miles of packing tape and had to be cut open. So now I'm out of luck.
totally destroyed box June 11, 2010 gruntled buyer 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
this set surprisingly came with all the pieces given the state of the box it came in. The box was taped together and ripped open. So my review is based on the poor condition that it was delivered.
Excellent for your buck May 26, 2010 sleo91 (Cali) I have a similar set of dumbells, except that mine only have two and not 4 four 5-pound plates.
Anyway I bought it to get back in shape, I use to go to the gym but there's none close to where I live and I didn't want to have to pay 50+ a month for a gym membership, just to use the weight so I decided to buy some weight to work out at home. The set will be enought for most of the people if you're just planning on getting back to working out or just to stay in shape, but for those who plan on doing some serious bodybuilding, I'll say get a more expensive set right away, like a threaded weight sets with 160-pounds should do.
One of the good thing about this set is since the weight plates are floor-friendly, there's no risk of messing your house, I dropped my weight plates a few time and nothing happen but a big noise and the weight were fine as well.
So if you're thinking about dropping the gym and staying home to stay in shape, and save some money, go with this set, and if after a while you think you need something more challenging you can just sell it.
And if you're seriously thinking about getting in shape, read The New Encyclopedia of Modern Bodybuilding : The Bible of Bodybuilding, Fully Updated and Revised, this book tells you all you need to know for that...
not strong dumbbell's bar May 26, 2010 Young O. Kwon Kim (Northvale, NJ) My husband uses little heavy dumbbells.
After using dumbbells, he keeps them on the holding bar.
Holding bar is bending little bit because of it's weight.
I think bar is not strong enough to hold heavy dumbbells.
It should be redesigned strong but not heavy.
Also dumbbell is not so great.
Mine was delivered as broken condition.
Amazon gave me a 10% credit but looks not good anyway.
If I want to buy same, I will go to shopping center and try and buy them.
