About Utility Benches
Despite the competition from trendy new fitness inventions, free-weight lifting continues to be a popular option for home strength training. Free weights offer a special benefit in strength training because they promote quicker strength gains. Free weights also work a larger number of muscles than resistance machines, which tend to focus on isolated muscles.

Specially-designed adjustable pads, grips, and bars help limit and guide movements to minimize the possibility of muscle or joint damage. Plus, from a single utility bench, a vast number of exercises can be performed. Whether it is focusing on the abdomen, arms, chest, or any other muscle group, a utility bench can help you maximize your strength training goals while minimizing your risk of personal injury.

30-year warranty on frame, one-year warranty on upholstery

4 out of 5 stars Very good quality bench   July 12, 2010
ZRRIFLE (Washington, D.C.)
As far as the quality and features, I don't think you'll be disappointed. It's very sturdy and I have no doubt this will last many years. The 5-position setting makes it very useful, especially for some workout routines that call for a 30 or 60 degree angle position.

However, as has been mentioned by a few other reviewers, the wheels are pretty useless for moving the unit. Also, and this is a safety issue: PLEASE be careful and make sure after you adjust the angle of the bench that it's set securely in the slot -- there have been a few occasions where the rubber/plastic covers that slip over ends of the adjustment bar, have caused it to slip out of position and the bench suddenly dropped down to the decline postion. I was fortunate that I wasn't injured, as this can cause major, or even disastrous results to someone holding heavy dumbbells in their hands, especially if they're facing downwards (such as a bench row position). I'm probably going to take off the rubber dampers altogether as I don't believe they're necessary for the bench to lock into each position.

5 out of 5 stars DURABLE and EASY TO USE   June 28, 2010

The bench arrived earlier than indicated and was pretty easy to put together. It's very easy with two people. It is quite sturdy even for a 250lb guy like myself. Very happy with the SelectTech Bench 5.1.

5 out of 5 stars Bowflex Adjustable bench   May 4, 2010

I ordered this to complement my SelectTech dumbells. The bench was relatively easy to put together. I liked the fact the bench has wheels so if I am not using it I can easily put it away in the back room. The construction seems good except for the rubber cushion at the base of the bench. This is where the bar rests when it is in the full decline position. The cushion is already breaking (I have used it 4 times), but if needed could be replaced easily. The cushion would not be needed if you do not use the bench in the full decline position. For the money the bench is a good deal since comparable benches are more expensive.

3 out of 5 stars Could be improved.   March 9, 2010

An adequate product that will get the job done. The seating material is a little thin, will likely be the first thing to deteriorate. Assembly wasn't difficult, although you need to be sure to just barely put in all of the screws on the back of the seat before tightening any of them down too far as the holes are not aligned well. One of the connections on the base was not threaded properly, so I just went for the gusto and all seems to be working so far.

I am pleased that I decided to go for the 5.1 bench over the 3.1 version. The extra incline positions and leg attachment are worth it if this is you only piece of gym equipment (besides some free weights).

As others commented, my packaging was delivered pretty roughed up (by no fault of the carrier). Bowflex really skimped on the cardboard--really cheap stuff--and it seemed like many of the components probably shifted around, breaking up the box from the inside-out.

5 out of 5 stars Better than Bowflex 3.1 bench!   January 29, 2010

My roommate had the 3.1 bowflex bench and got restationed in Guam so I had to break down and buy a bench. I went with the 5.1 because it has 0/30/45/60/90 degree settings versus the 3.1 which has 0/45/90. The benchs look the same but I think this one is sturdier. Has adjustable feet to level it out, and it also has a two-position adjustable seat which the 3.1 DID NOT HAVE. I like using different inclines and you can use them for support on other things besides bench (curls, offset shoulder work, etc). I honestly paid the extra $70 for the 60° setting because my shoulders have seen a lot of damage over the years and 45° give me less results at more risk of injury. So if you're looking for a reason as to WHY you should spend the extra money, it's simple: adds 30 & 60 degree inclines and an adjustable seat (MUCH BETTER and more versatile than 3.1). Oh and I've used many benches in lots of gyms of fitness stores over the years--this bench fits my frame well with good support under my back without hindering shoulder blade motion (like the benches at my gym). Also the adjustment is easy (on the way up, you just lift the head of the bench and it jumps to each setting, drop it to set it in place). The decline setting is OK, good for chest, not for abs--get a separate ab bench with adjustable decline angles or buy some inversion boots and hang from you're pullup bar. Oh and the leg attachment is removable on both benches--sometimes it gets in the way, pops out with a pin in about 3 seconds.
